The two volume second edition of this work, bound in four volumes. Published in the same year as the first edition.

Illustrated with three-hundred and nine engravings on one-hundred and seventy-seven plates, and with a folding map to volume I, and two single page plates to volume II. Collated, complete.

An extensive account of the Plains Indians in North America by George Catlin, exploring their culture, costumes, and manners. Compiled from letters and notes kept by the author during his eight years' travels among their tribes from 1832 to 1839, in which he shares his experiences and observations. 

Volume I of this work is split into two volumes, as Volume I Part I and Volume I Part II; Volume II of this work is split into two volumes, as Volume II Part I, and Volume II Part II. The first part of each volume retains the original title page, with a half title - not original to the work - to the start of the second part of each volume.

With library markings to the verso of title pages and half titles, and no further library markings.

The second edition of this truly impressive portrait of a native culture. 

Condition

Rebound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, exceptionally fine. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Library markings to verso of each title page. First folding map of volume I split at fold, with one portion loosely inserted. Further tape repair to fold of the same map. Neat repairs to final leaf of volume II, part II. Tape repair to margin of page 155-156 of volume I. Pages generally bright, with spotting throughout, most concentrated to plates and pages surrounding them.
