An important study of geology, serving as an accessible introduction to the science. First published as a single volume work in 1838.

Illustrated with a hand coloured frontispiece, and five plates, one of which is hand coloured, and four of which are folding. Collated, complete.

Lacking thirteen text leaves, being contents pages xxiii-xxiv, and text pages 1-24.

In his work, Scottish geologist Sir Charles Lyell educates the reader on the science of geology, from the four great classes of the rocks to the different ages of the Metamorphic rocks. He describes European rocks and fossils from the oldest then known to the recent discoveries.

The work of Charles Lyell, a geologist known for demonstrating the power of known natural causes in explaining the earth's history. In the introduction for this work, he thanks his friend, Charles Darwin.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth backed, paper covered boards. Front board detached, but present. Back strip significantly age toned, as is spine label. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Rear hinge strained, with board a touch tender at the head. Internally, generally firmly bound, with binding a touch strained to rear. Inscription to title page head. Light spotting to title page and plates, with pages otherwise lightly age toned but generally clean and bright. Lacking contents pages xxiii-xxiv, and text pages 1-24, so 13 leaves in total.
