These essays first appeared in The London Magazine between 1820 and 1825, published in book form in 1823 with a second volume in 1833. The present collection if of an early edition of 1840, both first and second series bound in one volume. Charles Lamb's essays were very popular in the nineteenth century, charming the reader with their personal and conversational tone. Themes explored were such of nostalgia, compassion, and regret.

Condition
In a half calf binding over marbled boards, new endpapers. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, lightly chipped to extremities, boards and spine rubbed, joints starting, boards holding firm. L. Harrison Matthews' ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few leaves, otherwise pages bright and clean throughout.
