The second edition of Pringle's Narrative of a Residence in South Africa, in a full calf prize binding from Huddersfield College, 1840. 

In full brown calf with intricate gilt decoration to the cloth boards and spine, with marbled pastedowns and a bookplate from Huddersfield College.

Narrative of a Residence in South Africa details the formative years spent in South Africa by Thomas Pringle, a well-known Scottish abolitionist and 'Father of South African poetry.'

This second edition includes the introductory biographical sketch of Pringle by Josiah Conder, but omits Pringle's verses of poetry after the prose narrative alone was deemed 'sufficiently complete.'

Condition

In a full brown calf prize binding from Huddersfield College with intricate gilt decoration to the cloth boards and spine. Externally, very smart, with only subtle shelf wear to the joints, extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight cracking of leather to spine. Minor handling marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot heavier to first and last few. Marbled pastedowns on which is a bookplate from Huddersfield College.
