First edition. Very scarce work. With a frontispiece and three plates. Collated complete. A historical notice of St Etheldreda's Church, a Catholic church in Ely Place, Holborn, London. The building is one of only two surviving in London from the reign of Edward I, and dates from between 1250 and 1290. Dedicated to Æthelthryth, or Etheldreda, the Anglo-Saxon saint who founded the monastery at Ely in 673. It was the chapel of the London residence of the Bishops of Ely. With accounts of the original townhouse of the Bishops, known as Ely Palace, and short biographical sketches of some of the most important Bishops. Written by Thomas Boyles Murray, an English minister and author.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the cloth at the head of the spine with the odd small split. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Minor chipping to the fore-edge.
