The first edition in book form of a work which had previously been published in parts.
Volume I and II only are present here; lacking volume III, the final volume.
The work begins with a frame narrative in which Master Humphrey and his friends share stories, marking the first appearance of 'Barnaby Rudge', and 'The Old Curiosity Shop'.
Illustrated throughout by George Cattermole and Hablot Knight Browne, better known as Phiz.
With a frontispiece to each volume, and numerous vignette illustrations throughout.
Volume I is in the publisher's original cloth binding, with volume II rebound in contemporary cloth. Endpapers of both volumes renewed.

Volume I is in the publisher's original cloth binding, where volume II is rebound in a contemporary cloth. Light fading to board perimeters. Endpapers of both volumes renewed. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fraying and loss of cloth to back strip head and tail of volume I. Rear joint heads and tails of volume I starting, with boards firmly held. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with handling marks throughout.
