A delightful collection of folk legends based around the villages and towns one passes along the Rhine from Cologne to Mainz. Largely derived from Deutsche Sagen, a collection of German legends by the Brothers Grimm which appeared in two volumes in 1816 and 1818.
Volume I is illustrated with six engraved plates and numerous vignettes. Volume II is illustrated with an engraved title page, six engraved plates and numerous vignettes. Collated, lacking engraved title page to Vol I.
Translated and compiled by author and journalist Joseph Snowe, who succeeded as editor of the Observer in 1857.
Condition
Rebacked, with the cloth from the original boards and spine laid down. Externally, with rubbing and slight bumping to the extremities. Fading to the front board of Vol II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional scattered spotting, heaviest to the first and last few leaves. Contemporary ink inscription to the title pages. Engraved title page to Vol II significantly age toned.
