The first edition of this work, complete in two volumes.
Volume I illustrated with five plates, and volume II with a frontispiece and two plates. Collated, lacking the frontispiece to volume I.
A detailed biography of Admiral of the Red James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez, a Royal Navy officer known for his victory at the Second Battle of Algeciras. He fought in the Mediterranean and American Revolutionary War, the Battle of the Saintes, the Battle of Cape St Vincent, the Blockade of Cadiz and the Battle of the Nile as well as in the Baltic Campaign.
This is the work of Rear-Admiral Sir John Ross, a British naval officer and explorer who served under Suamarez for a time. He gathers the information presented in this work from 'Original Papers in Possession of the Family'.
With the armorial bookplate of D. M. Coffin to front pastedowns.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strip. Light rubbing to back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinges strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, with instances of spotting to pages facing plates.
