What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Very Scarce

A very scarce work.

This second edition with additions and corrections, new tables, and an index, by John Britton. The first edition was published as 'An Illustration of the Architecture and Sculpture of the Cathedral Church of Lincoln' in 1819.

The cathedral is an impressive structure, the earliest parts dating back to 1072. From 1311 to 1548, the cathedral was the tallest building in a world. The current structure is an immense Gothic architectural endeavour, which holds one of the four remaining copies of the original Magna Carta.

Illustrated with sixteen double pages plates. Collated, complete.

Rebound in cloth, with publisher's label to front board, but with endpapers renewed.

Bookplate of Cynthia Chellini to front pastedown. Inscription to half title.

The work of Charles Wild, a watercolour artist who specialised in architecture, particular of cathedrals.

Condition

Rebound in cloth, with publisher's label laid down to front board, and with endpapers renewed. Back strip age toned, with boards bright. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Front and rear free endpaper removed. Half title tenderly held to tail only, with former owner's inscription. Internally, firmly bound. Text leaves clean and bright, with significant spotting to perimeters of plates.
