First Edition, Original Binding, Very Scarce

The first edition of this very scarce work.

An educational volume presenting Thomas Duncan's syllabus for an elementary course on maths. Divided into four parts, being 'On the Higher Equations', 'One Algebraic Geometry', 'On the Differential Calculus', and 'On the Integral Calculus'.

The author taught mathematics at the University of St. Andrews. 

From the library of American-British mathematician David Singmaster, with his ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Singmaster was emeritus professor of mathematics at London South Bank University, and was a puzzle historian, a big fan of mechanical puzzles, and an early adopter and promoter of the Rubik's Cube.

Condition

In the original quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, a little rubbed, lacking most of the backstrip. Light bumping to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards. Spine is discoloured. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's pencil and ink to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots.
