The first English edition.
This volume provides Basil Hall’s lively account of his stay at the Austrian estate of Countess Purgstall, one of the last surviving members of the Scottish-Styrian aristocratic connection. Hall recorded the events of this trip in this work, a Gothic travel account, which some consider to have inspired Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla.
Captain Basil Hall (1788–1844) was a Scottish naval officer and travel writer, celebrated for his wide-ranging voyages and descriptive narratives of America, India, and Asia.
