Original Binding

Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 – 13 December 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. From the advertisement for this edition: "In this volume the reader has presented to him a mass of miscellaneous Anecdotes and Sayings, gathered from nearly a hundred different publications...which are essential to the completion of the intellectual portrait of Johnson."

Condition

In an embossed brown cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Externally, rather worn. There are chips and closed tears to the spine. Corners are bumped. Boards are held by cords only. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Hinges are rather weak. Pages are foxed throughout, with some damp staining. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and an old ink inscription to the recto of front free-end paper.
