Complete in four volumes. With a portrait frontispiece to volumes one, two, and three. Originally published between 1833 and 1838, A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, was issued in four volumes as a supplement to Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Being a reference work listing families in Great Britain and Ireland enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank but uninvested with heritable honours. Arranged in alphabetical order, the entries provide the name of the head of the family, their position or role, with examples of any applicable coat of arms, and reference to their lineage, amongst other important or interesting factors. Written by John Burke, an Irish genealogist, and the original publisher of Burke's Peerage, an authority on the order of precedence of noble families and information on the lesser nobility of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Condition

Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the board tips and the head and tail of the spines. With fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Small cracks to the joints at the head and tail. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owners' bookplates to the front pastedown and endpaper. Bookseller's label to the rear pastedown of volume four.
