A very scarce first edition.

Including both parts of the work, with the first half dedicated to bones, and the second to muscles.

Illustrated with thirty 'highly-finished lithographic impressions'. Collated, complete.

The illustrations in this work are intended to advance the knowledge of artists and illustrators: 'As Applicable to the Fine Arts. Designed for the Use of Artists, And Members of the Artist's Anatomical Society'.

Simpson was a surgeon who also taught anatomy to artists.

Faint pencil inscriptions to front pastedown and front free endpaper.

The work was published by the author for subscribers, the list of whom includes the portrait painter and master drawing collector, Sir Thomas Lawrence, the illustrator George Cruikshank, and the surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip, joints, and board perimeters. Joints starting, with front board tenderly held to the tail only, and rear board only a touch tender to the head. Pencil inscriptions to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Title page detached to the tail. Ink marks to title page head. Text leaves clean and bright, with only the odd spot. Light spotting to plate perimeters.
