The work of the Rev. William Yate, an English Christian missionary working for the Church Mission Society.

Yate arrived in New Zealand in 1828 and quickly introduced himself to the Maori community, after previously learning the language. Yate brought with him a small printing press, notable for being the first press in New Zealand, with which he produced a version of the third catechism in Maori.

This work covers the formation and progress of the Church Missionary Society in New Zealand, however it also presents the customs, geography, nature and history of the country.

Yate continued to work for the mission until 1834, when he was dismissed due to controversial reports of his sexual encounters with a number of young Maori men.

With a few ink notations from a previous owner.
