An account of W. H. B. Webster's experience aboard the H. M. S. Chanticleer alongside Captain Henry Foster, on an expedition to the South Atlantic from 1828 to 1830. The author was surgeon of the ship.
Volume I is illustrated with a map to the frontispiece, and five plates.
Volume II is illustrated with a folding map to the frontispiece.
Institutional label of the Royal Marine Officers Library to the front paste downs, bookplate of Robert Lionel Foster to the recto of the front endpaper.
Collated, bound without the free endpapers, all illustrations are present.
Condition
In a rebacked quarter morocco binding with calf extremities and marbled paper to the boards. Externally, worn and rubbed. Lifting to the head of the spine of Volume II. Spines are faded. Small tears to the tail of the joints of Volume II. Loss to the extremities. Hinges are a little strained but remain firm. Bookplates to the front paste downs and to the recto of the front endpapers. Textblock of Volume II is detached from the binding. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots. The occasional institutional stamp to the text.
