Early Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound

Two works bound in one volume.

Baudry's European Library edition. Published the same year as the first edition of 'Italy'. Vathek first published in 1786, with this being the first Baudry edition.

Endpapers and blanks renewed. Lacking Baudry's European Library half title. Advertisement leaf and separate half title for Vathek are present.

Whilst one is a travel work and the other the epitome of gothic writing, both reflect Beckford's fascination with the exotic, the decadent, and the supernatural, embodying Romantic and Gothic sensibilities.

Condition

In modern half calf. Externally in lovely condition. Slight strain to lower extremity of front joint. Endpapers and blanks renewed. Lacking Baudry's European Library half title. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with minor tidemark to extremities of approximately the first 90 pages. Stain to title page of 'Italy'. The odd spot, heavier to the fore edge. Slight loss to the extremity of the occasional leaf, not impacting the text.
