Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

Present here are volumes I-XIII, XV, and XX-XXI. Volumes XIV and XVI-XIX are lacking.

David Hume was a Scottish historian, who original published his 'The History of England' in six volumes from 1754 to 1763. Hume was followed by Tobias Smollett, who viewed his own 'The History of England' as his greatest work. Smollett focused his research on the eighteenth century.

Thomas Smart Hughes finished 'The History of England', expanding Hume and Smollet's works to include the nineteenth century. He was a cleric and historian, whose continuation of Hume and Smollet's 'History' was undertaken at the request of A. J. Valpy, the publisher. His 'History' continuation was originally published in monthly issues, before being published into book form alongside the rest of the works.
