The work is based on original manuscripts, including Acts of Parliament, Privy Council records, and High Court of Justiciary proceedings.
Pitcairn details trials for crimes ranging from treason, heresy and witchcraft to theft and murder.
Pitcairn organises the material chronologically and includes transcriptions of legal documents, trial records, and related correspondence.
Volume I, Parts I and II cover the years 1488-1596; volume II focuses on 1596-1609, and volume III covers 1609-1624.
With a frontispiece to each volume.
Sir Walter Scott reviewed Pitcairn's work in the Quarterley Review, praising Pitcairn for producing "a most extraordinary picture of manners" that is "highly valuable in a philosophical point of view," and contains much that would "greatly interest the jurist and the moralist."
