The third edition, complete in two volumes.
First published in 1823, this is the work of British East India Company officer, diplomat, and administrator Sir John Malcolm, who utilised his own personal experiences in the writing of this work.
Malcolm was military and political administrator of Central India, including Malwa, from 1818 to 1822.
Volume I illustrated with a folding hand coloured map, and a folding monochrome map. Collated, complete.
With the charming contemporary inscription 'William Chafyn Grove - from his sincere friend George Hudson-Palmer, on his leaving Eton, 1858'.
The work traces the decline of the Mughal Empire, the rise of the Marathas, and British attempts to stabilise the region through reforms and governance.
Condition
In full calf bindings, with extensive gilt detailing to back strip. Externally, lovely, with fading to back strips, as is common with green calf. Light rubbing to back strip tails, and a touch of rubbing to volume II front joint. Inscription to a front blank of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to title pages, with offsetting to leaves facing plates. Pages otherwise clean and bright.
