Illustrated with an engraved title page and letterpress title page, and with fifty-two plates, each bearing two views. Collated, complete.
Authored and illustrated by S. Austin, J. Harwood, and G. and C. Pyne, this is a charming and impressive illustrated 19th century study of Lancashire, in which the castles and cathedrals, abbeys, noble homes, streets, bridges, and docks of the region are depicted and described.
With the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front pastedown of volume I.
Robert J. Hayhurst inherited and improved a successful group of retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst & Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire. He was a keen collector of naval history and of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, excellent, with a touch of rubbing to marbled paper. Front hinge head strained, but firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with light spotting throughout.
