Originally written in 1818/9 and published in various periodicals, 'The Doom of Devorgoil' was considered unsuitable at the time, before being published in book form in 1830. The earlier printings are also included in the 1830 Poetical Works.
Two plays from Scottish novelist, poet and playwright, Sir Walter Scott. Comprising 'The Doom of Devorgoil' and 'Auchindrane; or The Ayrshire Tragedy'.
Set in Scott's homeland of Scotland, these works contain themes of murder, betrayal and revenge.
With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, and the misnumbering of p202 and p275, as called for by Todd and Bowen.
With numerous newspaper clippings tipped-in from a previous owner, decorating the endpapers and blanks, all on the topic of Sir Walter Scott. Also with a bookplate of the Earl of Sheffield.
Bound in full calf. With half title.
Condition
Bound in full calf. Externally, rubbed to the extremities and joints. Joint ends are cracked, with evidence of glue repair. Hinges are a little strained. Bookplates and articles tipped-in to endpapers and blanks. A few spots to endpapers and fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean.
