First Edition

In the original French.

The first edition, second issue, with 'Hierro' signature to verso of half title, page 80 numbered 78, page 154 correctly numbered, and the reply to page 71 reading "Vous êtes mon seigneur, vaillant et généreux", as called for.

The work of celebrated French Romantic author Victor Hugo, known for such works as 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame' and 'Les Misérables'.

Hugo's drama is one of courtly romance and intrigue, in which noble outlaw Hernani seeks revenge against the King while competing for the love of a woman who is herself desired by her own guardian.

Verdi's opera Ernani was based on the play, and first performed in Venice in 1844.

Condition

Unbound. Externally, bright, but with light spotting to tail of final leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright, but with instances of spotting to page perimeters, and areas of foxing to perimeters of three pages. Small loss to tail of page 71.
