Author John Abercrombie was a Scottish physician, author, philosopher and philanthropist.

Abercrombie offers clinical observations and case studies about brain and spinal cord diseases, discussing post-mortem examinations, and focusing on conditions such as stroke, inflammation, tumours, and degenerative diseases affecting the central nervous system.

Library stamp of the Society of Apothecaries of London and the Webb Street School of Anatomy & Medicine Library to the title page, with a small number of stamps throughout.

With the bookplate of the Society of Apothecaries to the front pastedown, inscribed 'presented by H. W. Statham 1882'.

This work is regarded as the first textbook in neuropathology.

Condition

Rebacked, in a half calf binding with back strip laid down. Light rubbing to back strip, otherwise externally very smart. Light rubbing to joints. Retaining the original endpapers. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Library stamps to title page and further leaves. Pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with the odd spot.
