French. Very scarce work. With an engraved frontispiece. Three novels bound in one volume, being Le chalet des Hautes-Alpes, Deux feuillets du journal de mon ami Gustave, and Amour et Silence. Written by Isabelle de Montolieu, a Swiss novelist and translator who penned a few original novels and over one hundred volumes of translations. She is famed for having written the first French translation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (Raison et Sensibilite, ou Les Deux Manieres d'Aimer) and Persuasion (La Famille Elliot, ou L'Ancienne Inclination). Her first novel, Caroline de Lichtfield, ou Memoires d'une Famille Prussienne, was an influential instant best-seller in the 1780s and stayed in print until the mid-nineteenth century.
Condition
Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout. Further spotting to the first and last few pages with minor age toning to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
