These two works look into the rapid development of nineteenth century London, and the new buildings of George IV's London. They examine the rapid changes of London that the city underwent during the early part of the Industrial Revolution. With commentaries by English architect, civil engineer and art writer James Elmes.
'Metropolitan Improvements' illustrated with an engraved title page and seventy-eight engraved plates. Collated, complete.
'London in the Nineteenth Century' illustrated with an engraved title page and eighty engraved plates. Collated, complete.
Shepherd was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings.
Condition
In the original half crushed morocco, with green boards. Externally, with rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Fading to the spines. Bookplate of the de Pourtales family to the front paste downs. Internally, first few leaves are tender and pages v-16 to 'Metropolitan Improvements' at risk of detaching with further handling. Pages are generally bright, with scattered spotting largely concentrated to the plates to both volumes.
