Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding

The first edition.

Illustrated with two folding maps to 'Volume I'. Collated, complete, with both maps bound into 'Volume I', rather than one to Volume I and one to II.

'A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' is a fictional account of the life of Christopher Columbus, and is considered one of the first examples of American historical fiction. The work was one of many attempts at nationalistic myth making by poets and authors of the time, and is an early example to perpetuate the flat earth story.

Washington Irving was a noted American writer and historian, with this being one of his best known works.

A four volume, complete set.

Condition

Bound in half calf with marbled paper to the boards. Externally very smart with minimal edge wear, light rubbing to the boards, and the odd slight mark. Light tidemarks to the front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound with bright and light spotting to the front and rear.
