Description

Original Binding

Washington Irving's satirical history of New York.

Irving first published this work under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, as Irving started a hoax surrounding the figure of Knickerbocker. He placed a series of missing person adverts in newspapers, trying to find information about the fictional Dutch historian Knickerbocker. Irving also placed a notice, supposedly from a hotel proprietor, stating that if Knickerbocker did not return and pay his hotel bill, then the proprietor would publish a manuscript that Knickerbocker left behind.

'A History of New York' was subsequently published, much to the interest of the public, and received much success.

This was one of Irving's first popular works, before be become on of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe.

Half-title is present.
