Description

First Edition, Signed, Very Scarce

The first edition of this very scarce work.

Signed by the author to the head of the title page, "To James Bridges Esq, with Comps from the Author".

This essay replies to a previous essay by William Scott, written in response to George Combe's 'On the Constitution of Man', an important essay which Combe had printed and distributed amongst his friends in July 1827, published in a trade edition in 1828.

Combe's work is an important text in the study of phrenology, a pseudoscience which Combe popularised. Scott's response to the essay, which he had posted through Combe's door, deemed 'On the Constitution of Man' to be "a low, grovelling, and degrading system". This concise essay sees Combe combating Scott's opinion.

Condition
