With a presentation inscription to the poet to the rear endpaper, dated July 2nd 1884 and inscribed next to a blind stamped 'Haslemere, Surrey', the town that Tennyson moved to in the mid-19th century, commissioning an architect to build Aldworth House as his residence.
Below the inscription and blind stamp is a newspaper clipping detailing an interview with Dr. Whiting of Haslemere, who attended to Lord Tennyson when he was suffering from "some stomachic affection".
The first edition.
A scarce copy of this early nineteenth-century medical history from British surgeon and medical author, William Wadd.
Offering a fascinating account of the various key figures and historical events in the world of medicine, including the establishment of barber-surgeons in 1461 and the remedy of tar water for the plague. The work begins with a memoranda, from the date of the first hospital founded in Canterbury to the year 1800, in which a charter was granted to the Royal College of Surgeons.
Bound in half calf with cloth boards.
With a series of charming contemporary ink inscriptions from the other previous owner of this work, W. E. Dawson, a physician who worked in Walton-le-Soken (now Walton-on-the-Naze) as well as Hamford Waters as an admiralty surgeon for the Royal Navy.
With a letter tipped in to the rear pastedown from George Brown, Editor of The Hospital Gazette, a weekly review of medicine and surgery who confirms the wish for an article from the W. E. Dawson. Dawson also has inscribed 'Navy and Army Illustrated Xmas No. 1898' to the front pastedown, suggesting he provided an article for this magazine also.
