This novel is set just after the English Civil War in 1651, inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock. Mainly this novel focuses on the escape of Charles II, and his eventual return to England in 1660.
Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' was the first poem of his that brought him into the spotlight of the public's eye, establishing him as one of the most popular writers of his time.
Condition
In half calf with marbled covered boards. Externally worn with loss to backstrip of volume one. Rubbing to joints and boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright with scattered spots, heavier to the first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription to blanks.
