A collection of fifty-two short biographies and critical appraisals of poets, most of whom lived during the eighteenth century. Johnson was asked by a deputation of London publishers and booksellers, led by Thomas Davies, William Strahan and Thomas Cadell, to provide short biographies for a standard edition of poets in whom they had an interest. These volumes include writings on poets such as Cowley, Milton, Walsh, Dryden, Addison, Somerville, Collins, and more. Written by Samuel Johnson, an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer.
Condition
Bound in full straight grained morocco. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Minor age toning and light spotting to the endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper with the bookseller's label to the front pastedown.
