It begins with a mock-Miltonic passage on the origins of the sofa before developing into a discursive meditation on nature, retired life and religious faith. Cowper was a popular English poet and hymnodist. He changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by composing works on every day life and scenes of the English countryside. To many, he is considered a forerunner of Romantic poetry.
