Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Scarce

The first edition of the work, in three volumes. Scarce.

Collated, with six monochrome plates. Lacking folding frontispiece to volume one and final leaf of text to volume one. Remaining plates are bound incorrectly between contents and first leaf of text of volume one (which is quite common for this work). Endpapers renewed.

Two leaves of  publisher's advertisements for G and W. B. Whittaker, dated September 1824 tipped in opposite title page to volume one.

In full calf.

Written by British explorer, William Bennet Stevenson. Stevenson lived in South America for many years, notably during the Spanish American wars of independence.

A Historical and Descriptive Narrative of Twenty Years' Residence in South America is Stevenson's Magnum Opus, offering a very influential first hand narrative of his experiences in the region, with a particular focus on Peru, Chile and Ecuador. The work was a great source of inspiration for Prescott when writing his work, 'History of the Conquest of Peru'.
