This third edition of Théorie des peines et des récompenses distills Bentham’s utilitarian ideas on punishment and reward, systematised and edited by Étienne Dumont from Bentham’s manuscripts.

Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English jurist and philosopher, pioneered utilitarianism. Étienne Dumont (1759-1829) was his trusted editor and interpreter, whose French editions introduced Bentham’s radical ideas to Continental Europe.

Condition

Bound in a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Two discreet bookplates to front paste downs. Slight rubbing to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot, scattered spotting to first and last few leaves.
