First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition.

Complete in three volumes.

An extra-illustrated copy, with a frontispiece to each volume. 

Set in Dumfriesshire in 1765, the novel describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion, and includes "Wandering Willie's Tale", a famous short story which frequently appears in anthologies of Scott's works.

This novel has been described as 'the most autobiographical of Scott's novels' by Andrew Lang and Magnus Magnusson

Half-title and fly-title present to each volume.

Bound without the adverts to the rear of Volume III.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Spines and extremities are a little faded. Minor rubbing to the joints and extremities. Light marks to the boards and spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge of Volumes I and III are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with a few scattered spots.
