The author the notion of fixed or arbitrary rules of literary composition, and endeavoured to establish a new theory based on the principles of human nature.

Written by Henry Home, Lord Kames. He was a Scottish judge and philosopher, being a central figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. His proteges include David Hume, Adam Smith, and James Boswell.

This was his most popular and important work, analysing the rules of literary composition, and the principles of human nature. It has been argued that this work and Home's influence on the development of English as an academic discipline within the Scottish Universities.

With the bookplate of E. A. Cross to the front pastedown.

In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Back strip age toned. Front joint head and tail starting, with boards firmly held. Front joint head and tail starting, with board tenderly held by two cords only. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
