1824 The Poems of Ossian
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding
Complete in two volumes. With a frontispiece to each volume. A cycle of epic poems purported to be authored by Ossian. These volumes contains titles including: Carthon, Colna-Dona, Lathmon, Fingal, Dar-thula, The Battle of Lora, Temora, Berrathon, and many others. Macpherson claimed to have collected word-of-mouth material in Scottish Gaelic, said to be from ancient sources, and that the work was his translation of that material. Contemporary critics were divided in their view of the work's authenticity, but the current consensus is that Macpherson largely composed the poems himself, drawing in part on traditional Gaelic poetry he had collected. Written by James Macpherson, a Scottish writer, poet, literary collector, and politician best known for this work.
