First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

The first edition, second issue, "Small Paper" edition, published December 17th 1823. The first issue, large paper edition was published on December 1st 1823.

Collated, with all issue points called for in Francis Lewis Randolph's 'Studies for a Byron Bibliography', including the watermark of 'J. Whatman'. As stated in the bibliography, it is unknown how many copies of this issue of the first edition were published, but it is thought to be around 2,500 to 3,000.

Bound in the publisher's original boards, rebacked with the spine laid down. With a label from Nottingham Reference Library to the front board.

Comprised of Cantos XII. - XIII. and XIV of Lord Byron's famous epic poem, Don Juan. Written between 1819 and 1824, this work explores the Spanish folk legend of Don Juan, a man who is usually portrayed as a womaniser, although here is painted as the victim, seduced by women.

With a library issue plate to the front paste down and a bookseller label to John Stacy.

With the occasional library stamp, including to title page. Issued without the half title and with two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, as called for.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's original boards, rebacked with the spine label laid down. With a label from Nottingham Reference Library to the front board. Externally, sound, with slight rubbing to extremities, heavier to the spine, causing splits to joints. Slight loss to the spine head and paper covering the spine, including a little loss to the spine label. The odd mark to boards. Front hinge is slightly strained, but holding firm. Bookseller label and library plate to front paste down. The odd spot to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot or handling mark. Library stamp to title page and one or two further pages.
