The foremost English poet of the early eighteenth century, and master of the heroic couplet, Pope is best known for his satirical poetry, including mock epic 'The Rape of the Lock', and his essays of literary criticism.
This collection of Pope's works features notes and analysis from English clergyman, academic, and literary critic Joseph Warton, who was a friend of Samuel Johnson, and was part of the literary group surrounding publisher Robert Dodsley.
With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedowns, and each volume uniformly bound in half calf.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip heads and centre of boards. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Front hinge of volume V starting, with board firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, but with significant spotting to start of volume I, and light spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume.
