The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner with an Account of His Travels round Three Parts of the Globe, stated as written by himself to the title pages, as was published in the first edition in 1719. This led many readers to believe Robinson Crusoe was a real person and the book was a travelogue of real incidents.
The first volume includes an overview of the life of Daniel Defoe, who was an English writer, merchant and journalist, with this novel being his most famous. Daniel Defoe is seen as an early proponent of the novel.
With woodcut illustrations throughout the text.
Condition
Bound in full diced calf with gilt detailing. Externally, sound, with rubbing to leather, heaviest to backstrip and joints. Loss to the backstrip head of volume I. Cracks to the joints, with a little loss surrounding the joints. Front joints to both volumes and rear joint to volume I are tender, holding by just a few cords. Rear joint to volume II is strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with a few spots to the end pages.
