The fifth edition of this work, complete in two volumes.

In about 1727 and 1728 Burt wrote a series of letters about his experiences in Scotland as a rent collector for the British Government. He offers an account of life in the Scottish Highlands, recording the customs, manners, language and social organisation of the clans.

Edited and with additional contextual explanations from R. Jamieson.

Lacking the frontispiece to each volume.

With the bookplate of Francis E. B. Witts to front pastedowns, and library stamps to title page heads and a small number of further leaves.

Condition

In quarter calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strips. Externally, excellent. Front hinge of volume I firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Lacking frontispieces. Library stamps to title page heads, and one or two further leaves. Pages otherwise clean and bright.
