The sixth edition of John Playfair's Elements of Geometry, in a full tree calf binding. John Playfair (10 March 1748 – 20 July 1819) was a Church of Scotland minister, remembered as a scientist and mathematician, and a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. With a page of original publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work.
Contains the first six books of Euclid - a mathematical system attributed to Euclid, an ancient Greek mathematician - with a supplement on the quadrature of the circle and the geometry of solids. Also contains insights on 'elements of plane' and spherical trigonometry.
Condition
In a full calf binding with red spine label. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to joints and extremities. Areas of loss to boards and spine head and tail. Spine cracked and starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned but clean. Contemporary ink inscription from 1825 to front free endpaper. With a page of original publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work.
