The very scarce first edition of this work from British science lecturer and writer Charles Frederick Partington.

Illustrated with a folding frontispiece, five double paged plates, and two folding plates. Collated, complete.

Partington traces the development of steam power from its earliest experiments to its practical application in the early nineteenth century. He explains the principles of steam operation, profiles key inventors and engineers, and describes various types of engines and their uses in industry and transport. 

Rebacked, retaining original endpapers.

The work is both a technical and historical study, illustrating the steam engine's transformative role in modern industry.

Condition

Rebacked, in a full calf binding, with gilt detailing, and retaining the original endpapers. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, but with light offsetting and spotting to title page.
