Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Italian. Two volumes bound into one. With a frontispiece to each piece, totaling two plates. This set contains: Aminta, 1822. A play represented during a garden party at the county of Ferrara written in hendecasyllabic and septenary verses and divided into five acts. Set in the time of Alexander the Great, the pastoral story is about Aminta's love for the beautiful nymph Silvia, who does not return his attentions and prefers hunting. Written by Torquato Tasso, an Italian poet of the sixteenth century, known for his 1591 poem Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered). Tasso had mental illness and died a few days before he was to be crowned on the Capitoline Hill as the king of poets by Pope Clement VIII. Il Pastor Fido, 1822. A pastoral tragicomedy set in Arcadia, written in emulation of Tasso's Aminta, it was extremely successful and remained one of the most popular work of secular literature in Western Europe for almost two hundred years. To redress an ancient wrong, the gods of Arcadia every year demand the sacrifice of a virgin. According to the oracle, this curse can only be lifted when a young man and a young woman, each of godly descent, are wed. Written by Giovanni Battista Guarini, an Italian poet, dramatist, and diplomat best known for this work.
