'Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice' is a blank verse tragedy by Byron, inspired when he was looking at portraits of the Doges in Venice in the Palazzo Ducale, and saw that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out.
Byron's play is set in Venice in 1355, with Faliero having been recently elected as Doge of Venice, and follows Faliero through is failed coup d'etat and subsequent execution.
Including the poem 'The Prophecy of Dante'.
With the armorial bookplate of C. E. J. Esdaile of Cothelstone Manor House in Somerset to the front pastedown.
An attractive example of this scarce edition.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Small losses to tail of spine label. Rubbing to joints, with joint heads and tails starting, and boards firmly held. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with instances of spotting throughout, and the odd area of light foxing to page perimeters.
