This is a charming epistolary travel narrative presented in the form of instructive letters from a young traveller to his sister, designed to introduce youthful readers to the geography, customs, and landmarks of England.
Illustrated with a fold-out map frontispiece and five plates. Sadly, the plate depicting Cambridge from Castle Hill, facing page 12, has been torn out of this copy. All other plates collated and complete.
Condition
Bound in a quarter roan binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in minor loss to roan and marbled paper. Front joint slightly cracked, with front board loose, but holding. Bookplate from the Dorset collection to front paste down. Front hinge cracked with binding materials slightly exposed, slightly loose but holding. Bookplate of Denis Gray to front free endpaper with previous owner's contemporary inscription. Internally, generally firmly bound. Frontispiece slightly disbound at upper gutter, but holding.
