The first edition, complete in two volumes.

The travel letters of William Stewart Rose, penned whilst he was travelling across the North of Italy.

Whilst these letters mostly focus on the sights of Italy, Rose digresses frequently to discuss aspects of Italian culture and society of the day, including an interesting mention of the satirical poet Giuseppe Parini. Rose also expresses pro-Napoleon sentiments. 

Rose wrote these letters to his friend, historian Henry Hallam. 

Lacking the half titles, and without the advertisements to the rear of volume II.

Bookplate of T. W. Bowen to front pastedowns.

Condition

In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strips. Rubbing to joints and centre of boards. Tail of volume I front joint and volume II rear joint starting, with boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot.
