Description

Leather Binding

First published in 1748, this is a charming early 19th century two volume edition of Smollett's work.

In handsome half calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strip.

A brilliant picaresque novel by Tobias Smollett, set in the 1730s and 1740s, following a young man who is shunned by his father's family. The novel follows Roderick Random on his search for fortune and love.

'The Adventures of Roderick Random' was partly based on Smollett's experience in the British Navy. The protagonist, Roderick, travels around to France, South America, Bath, and the West Indies, the text being imbued with Smollett's own travel notes, with rich and vivid descriptions of the places Random travels to.

Volume I retains the original half title.
