    A history of the lives, manners, and customs, of monks and nuns in England. An insightful examination of English monastic life, with studies on ancient pilgrims, hermits, and people who have made vows of chastity. 

    Four poems are included, 'Economy of Monastic Life' by Spenser, 'Triumph of Vengeance, an Ode' by Gray, 'The Red Man, or Address of Buonaparte's Familiar Daemon' by Gray and Collins, and 'An Epitaph' by the German Manner.

    Illustrated with a frontispiece, twelve plates, and two engravings. Collated, complete.

    Condition

    In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed, resulting in a small amount of loss of leather to the head of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small tears to the head of the joints. Bookplate to the front paste down and to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with scattered spots. Small tidemark to the frontispiece.
